MOTORISTS want an extra lane added to the notorious Army and Navy flyover - after another plan to improve the roundabout below was revealed.

The £2million project - funded by the Department for Transport and county council - will see the slip road linking Parkway with Chelmer Road lengthened in a bid to ease congestion.

This comes after a £1.5million scheme for an extra lane to the Parkway junction heading into the city centre was approved earlier this year, with work due to start soon.

Yet motorists believe focus should shifted to the flyover, with extra cash ploughed into widening it from one lane to two, allowing cars to travel in both directions.

Danny Moore, 35, of Wharf Road, Chelmsford, said: “The latest plans still ignore the glaringly obvious fact the roundabout would benefit most from a two lane, two way flyover.”

In March last year, 45-year-old Sarah Wilkinson was killed in a crash after she drove the wrong way over the flyover.

Trevor Crisp, 53, of Clyde Crescent, feels changing the flyover to two lanes is a must.

He said: “It has always been a nightmare and no matter what the cost is lots of people would support the idea.

“It would ease congestion and stop accidents caused by people using the flyover when it is actually closed in their direction and they don’t realise.”

Chelmsford MP Simon Burns agreed.

Mr Burns said: “If it is technically possible I would very much like to see a two-way flyover in addition to the remedial work the Government and the county council are already funding.

“This would need further work to establish if it is viable and cost effective.”

A county council spokesman would not comment on the possibility of a two-way flyover, but said: “The current roundabout scheme will provide a gateway to Chelmsford.”
