Maldon District Council has activated its emergency plan after the Environment Agency issued flood warnings for the area.
Staff are working closely with the emergency services to deal with any areas that may be affected to ensure the safety and welfare of residents.
A spokesman said: "The council is unable to provide sandbags as the responsibility to protect property is that of the occupant, not the council.
"If you believe your property may be affected we would advise you to make any necessary precautions if you can do so safely and move your valuables upstairs or to a higher location."
There are currently no plans to evacuate homes in the district.
The council’s emergency centre can be contacted on 01621 854477.
