Thousands of people are again expected to line Maldon’s High Street as the town celebrates the festive season.

Maldon Christmas Fayre returns for its second year after the event successfully replaced 2011’s Making Maldon Magical, which received a mixed reaction having been organised following the collapse of the town’s Victorian Evenings.

Last year’s debut event attracted at least 3,000 people and organisers are hoping for another excellent turnout when the event returns on Thursday December 12.

Organised by the Maldon Mud Race charity, with help from Maldon Town Council, Maldon Tourist Information Centre and Maldon Business Association, the town’s festive showpiece will include a mixture of charity and commercial stalls, as well as entertainment from two choirs and Maldon Youth Orchestra.

There will be children's fairground rides and mini roundabouts, while Father Christmas will be parading through High Street and in his grotto in Maldon Town Hall from 6.30pm for the younger children.

Many of the town’s businesses will also be open for late night shopping.

Brian Farrington, chairman of the Maldon Mud Race charity, said: “There will be lots of traditional Christmas fun including Morris dancers, plus many local suppliers with foods, mulled wine and ales from Farmers Ales.

“To top it off, we will have roasted chestnuts and a fabulous festive atmosphere with Christmas lights and decorations, and, of course, we welcome any donations to the various charity stall holders who will be there on the night.

“We do hope that people will turn out and support the evening and enjoy the wide variety of stalls and entertainment on offer."

High Street will be closed to traffic from 6pm until 9pm while the event takes place.
