Maldon district: Car thefts and violence up, but overall crime down
5:00pm Tuesday 15th October 2013 in Local News
Violence and theft of cars are on the up in the Maldon district, according to latest police figures.
Incidents of violence against a person rose by 13 per cent – or 49 more offences – between September 1 last year and August 31 this year, compared to the same period in 2011/12.
Theft and taking of vehicles rose 44.9 per cent, from 69 offences to 100.
This was despite all crime falling by 10.4 per cent – equivalent to 246 fewer offences.
Det Chief Insp Louise Beattie, acting district commander, said a large number of the violent incidents were domestic and she believed the increase may be due to greater focus on these offences and more people coming forward to report them.
