Maldon district: Police team to tackle rural crime
3:00pm Monday 14th October 2013 in Local News
Volunteer police are being trained to specialise in tackling rural crime.
The 12 special constables will be based in South Woodham Ferrers and cover the Maldon district.
The rural crime team is due to go live by January and Essex Police hopes to recruit more from the district, particularly volunteers who work in farming.
Leon Dias, chief officer for the county's special constabulary, said: “Maldon and the Dengie have received excellent support from special constables.
“It has had one of the strongest and most productive team of specials in Essex.
“The farming community in particular see a lot of officers that come out and don't know much about the rural community."
Mr Dias said the specials will be in addition to regular police officers, not a replacement for them.
