Burnham: 'We'll chain ourselves to this tree to save it'
Residents have threatened to chain themselves to an historic tree in Burnham amid fears that it may be chopped down for a roundabout.
Angry residents hope to campaign to save the tree at the junction with Church Road and Maldon Road after Essex County Council Highways department indicated that infrastructure improvements will be required there in the draft Local Development Plan.
It is believed that the infrastructure changes include creating a roundabout which could mean chopping down the tree, which is thought to be around 200 years old.
Burnham’s tree warden Robert Evans, 67, of Bouvel Drive, is hoping Maldon District Council will put a tree preservation order on the tree, which will mean it is an offence to carry out any work on it without permission from the council.
He said: “I think it’s absolutely outrageous, it’s a landmark and people relate to it."
