Maldon: Charity calls for council to support single parent families
5:00pm Friday 11th October 2013 in Local News
A charity is calling for Maldon District Council to stop including child maintenance in council tax calculations for single parent families.
It is one of 22 councils named by Gingerbread, which supports single parents.
The charity said counting child maintenance as household income meant single parent families could lose up to a fifth of the value of their maintenance.
There are 86 families in the district receiving child maintenance, the average monthly payment being £307 and the highest is £1,400.
Maldon District Council said it had carefully considered the implications of including maintenance in its tax calculations and had consulted residents about the options.
It had to make "very difficult decisions" about its Local Council Tax Support Scheme following a significant reduction in Government funding and it had aimed to make it fair to all, including the tax payer in general, whilst remaining affordable and ‘cost neutral.'
