Maldon: Sam Callahan battles illness to win place at judges house
X Factor hopeful Sam Callahan has battled his way through to the judges houses after overcoming a serious throat infection which nearly put his performance in jeopardy.
Luckily the nineteen-year-old heartthrob, of Great Totham, pulled through just before he took part in the bootcamp stage of the ITV talent show, which saw contestants battle it out for one of six places in their category.
The cruel twist in this year’s show is that contestants could gain one of the six seats, but the judges could change their mind and replace them if another singer gave a better performance.
Sam, who is a barman and waiter at the OAKhouse bar and cafe in Maldon’s High Street, wowed over the judges with his performance of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, accompanied by just his guitar.
Mentor Louis held the power on the night and told Sam: “My only problem is, are you going to win the competition for me?
“I am just not sure.”
But Sam’s dreams came true when he added: “Sam take the first seat.”
