Maldon: Rural bus services under threat?
1:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in Local News
Rural, evening and weekend bus services could also be at risk of cuts.
Essex County Council currently pays £7.9million for nearly 200 services on commercially unviable routes, including a number in the Maldon district and South Woodham Ferrers.
Most run either in the evenings, on Sundays, or serve rural locations.
Cabinet member for highways, Rodney Bass, said: “Given the challenging economic climate, we must be realistic and accept that it is likely that not all needs across the county can be met and that the funding available in the coming years will be reduced.”
The council said no service will be withdrawn at this stage and the consultation will not affect commercial services.
Any changes will come into place between September 2014 and September 2015.
Residents have until December 9 to respond to the consultation, which is online at www.essex.gov.uk
