Cowling's shot at MP Priti Patel
8:50am Monday 12th August 2013 in Local News
Mr Cowling used his match day programme notes to make his point before the U’s home win against Port Vale, on Saturday.
He said Ms Patel’s “constant crusade” against the club’s training ground, in Grange Road, on noise grounds was a factor in the U’s falling three per cent short of gaining category two football academy status in a Football Association audit.
As a result, the U’s under-21 side will not have an organised league to play in this season.
“Facilities are still an issue for the club and local MP Priti Patel’s constant crusade against Colchester United’s training ground has not helped matters,” wrote Mr Cowling.
“We are in the crazy situation whereby the club is trying to build facilities that have enormous community benefits and yet Priti has decided to put the benefits of many in jeopardy for the wishes of a few.
“I don’t expect the club to be granted permission for anything it does not deserve but I don’t expect matters to be deliberately made more difficult for us either.”
Ms Patel, who represents Tiptree, said she has only represented her constituents after Colchester Council did not take their grievances, which centre on noise, seriously.
She added: “Residents have been ignored and it is my responsibility to make sure their voices are heard."
