Man punched after tackling would-be burglars
4:53pm Sunday 11th August 2013 in Local News
DETECTIVES are warning the public not to tackle burglars after a man was assaulted by two other men trying to get into his garden.
The man woke up at about 3am yesterday morning to sounds of his front door handle being turned and when he went downstairs to investigate, he was met by two men trying to open the back gate.
He then shouted at them and tried to block their escape, but was punched twice in the face, leaving him with a badly swollen eye.
Investigators now want to hear from anyone witnessed the incident, in Newbridge Road, Tiptree, or heard shouting near to Silverthorne Close.
DC Claire Jennings, investigating officer, said: “Members of the public should never be tempted to go out to confront burglars because they know they face going to prison if caught and they will be desperate to get away.
“We would always urge residents to phone 999 as soon as they see or hear anything suspicious so police can be sent as quickly as possible and stand a better chance of catching offenders.”
Anyone with information on the men should contact DC Jennings at Colchester CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
