Maldon: Tributes to the first Indian to move into town Maldon: Tributes to the first Indian to move into town

Tributes have been paid to a “true gentleman” who is believed to have been the first Indian to move into Maldon.

Community-spirited Kali “Cawasji” Gazi, a former Marconi employee, died suddenly after a short illness at the age of 80.

When Mr Gazi moved into the town with his pregnant young wife Zarin, also from India, they were two of the first residents to move into the new build houses of Essex Road some 49 years ago, on March 10 in 1964 to start their family life.

I remember this gentleman and his family, we moved into Viking Road around the same time as him. A very pleasant man. Sincere condolences to his family.
