Maldon: Councillor opposes Wetherspoons' opening hours

Maldon: Councillor speaks out over Wetherspoons Maldon: Councillor speaks out over Wetherspoons

A Maldon councillor is opposing a pub’s proposed opening hours.

Michael Pearlman, district councillor for Maldon North, strongly opposes the hours Wetherspoons has put forward for the former Maldon post office premises, which it is set to open up in.

The married father-of-four said: “They are proposing 8am to midnight Sunday to Wednesday, and 8am to 1am Thursday to Saturday, which will cause no end of problems."

So this councillor can see into the future? I'm impressed. Why not see what happens and alter the hours subsequently if needed?

I'm happy to see them open ; anything is better than the current empty space.

Come on M&B, we need some meat on the bone, rather than the sketchy,
“They are proposing 8am to midnight Sunday to Wednesday, and 8am to 1am Thursday to Saturday, which will cause no end of problems."

These problems the councillor alludes to; I'm guessing that he doesn't refer to those potentially faced by businesses encountering competition...surely as a Conservative, he should champion the free market economy...or maybe he can sight a precedent for problems associated with the proposed opening hours? I personally don't think a comparison between Wetherspoons and other venues would apply under close scrutiny.

If there any businesses concerned about how the opening of a Wetherspoons in Maldon could impact their current modus operandi, I would have thought that in his professional capacity as a Management Consultant, Mr Pearlman is well placed to advise.

This article is I'm certain, deliberately vague, hopefully there will be a full story to flesh out the councillors assertion, otherwise on it's own this infers councillor Pearlman has access to a crystal ball...and the majority of us don't believe in mumbo jumbo...
