A father-of-two has been cleared over the drowning of a fellow Brit tourist 16 years ago.

Kitchen fitter Darren Sapstead, who grew up in Heybridge, faced a jury as he was accused of pushing Garry Walton to his death during a pleasure boat booze cruise in November 1996.

Yesterday, the Spanish jury acquitted Mr Sapstead, a former Plume School pupil, of any involvement in Garry’s death after five hours of deliberation.

Mr Sapstead of Thornborough Avenue, South Woodham Ferrers, spoke of his relief following the trial and said it had taken a long time for the truth to finally come out.
