Five teenage girls will ditch their warm beds for the cold outdoors in a bid to raise cash for a shelter charity.

Thirteen-year-old Rachel Higgins, of Crescent Road, Heybridge, and her four friends will sleep in the back garden with nothing but a sleeping bag, pillows and a cardboard box to emulate homelessness.

Plume School student Rachel with schoolfriends Freya Sharp, Lucy Clarke, Paige Rowell and Chelsey Moss decided to raise money for Colchester Night Shelter after seeing homeless people on the street.

She said: “I wanted to do it because I thought it would be quite a fun experience.

“We always see people on the streets and I thought it would be nice to experience what it would be like.

“We would really like to help out.”
