Residents in the Maldon District now have the option of paying council tax in 12 monthly installments rather than 10, thanks to a new government legislation.

District councillor Bryan Harker suggested the move at a council meeting months ago, in order to relieve pressure from struggling residents.

Cllr Harker said: “If the council tax was split over the 12 month instead of the current 10, it will be a lot easier for people to pay.

“Each monthly amount would be about 10 per cent less.

“People have still got the choice, they can pay the whole lot in one go or they can still pay in 10 months."
