Two Maldon pensioners have been left saddened after their prized antique possessions were stolen in a raid.

The grandparents of five, who did not want to be named, had thousands of pounds worth of family heirlooms stolen during a burglary last Tuesday.

Crooks smashed the kitchen window and raided the house in the London Road area between 7.30am and 6.20pm, while the couple were on a day trip to London.

The thieves rifled through desks and drawers downstairs before finding the two miniature paintings and jewellery in a tin box in a bedside cabinet in the bedroom.

The miniatures, which were originally found by the couple in a relative’s loft in Suffolk, are believed to be paintings of one of the couple’s ancestors.
