The big freeze has finally hit Maldon as heavy snowfall caused traffic chaos and disruption across the district.

The whiteout began at the weekend with blizzards and icy conditions causing crashes on the roads.

Christina Wright, of Mill End, Bradwell-on-Sea, is calling for gritters to focus more on the country roads after her partner was an injured on an icy road in Southminster.

The 21-year-old, who is 32 weeks pregnant, claimed Tillingham Road had not been gritted when her partner, Dave Bailey, 29, came off his moped on Thursday.

She said: “He was on his way to work as he gets the train from Southminster. He was driving slow as he was on a moped when he just came off the road.

“The roads weren’t gritted at all, you could skate on them."
