Maldon: Waterlogged ground affects New Year hunt Maldon: Waterlogged ground affects New Year hunt

Wet weather prevented the New Year’s Day hunt in Maldon from taking place, but riders still paraded through the town centre.

The annual event, organised by the Essex Farmers and Union Hunt, started from the Boar Hotel, in Silver Street, yesterday morning.

A total of 76 riders took part in the parade as huntsmen and hounds travelled along the High Street, watched by residents who lined the streets.

As well as the hunt’s supporters, representatives from the Essex Animal Defenders group were present to protest against the hunt.

Senior master Douglas Hill said: “An awful lot of people have come along today and we have been overwhelmed with the support.”
