Maldon district: Calls for more road safety investment after crossing plan shelved

Calls have been made for more money to be spent on making the district’s roads safer after plans for a pedestrian crossing where a teenager died were scrapped.

According to crashmap.co.uk, there were 18 fatal road accidents in the Maldon district between 2006 and 2011, including that which killed 17-year-old Tim Dunn, who was in collision with a car in Heybridge Approach while out jogging in July 2007.

Maldon’s local highways panel, which is responsible for setting priorities for highways schemes in the district, has the lowest budget in the county.

It has been allocated £400,000 for 2012/13 - just 5 per cent of the county’s overall £8million budget.

At the panel’s latest meeting, any outside chance of a controlled pedestrian crossing being installed in Heybridge Approach was put to bed when the idea was removed from the potential schemes list.
