About £21,000 has been spent by the fire service so far this year responding to false alarms in the Maldon District.

Maldon firefighters have received 66 phone calls this year from either an apparatus or through good intent, which have turned out to be false alarms.

They have also dealt with four malicious calls so far this year, compared with two in 2011 and four in 2010.

The number of false alarms are decreasing each year, with firefighters responding to 119 in 2010 and 112 in 2011.

The fire service estimates the average amount spent on each incident is £300.
