Police are urging boat owners across the Maldon district to protect their property from coastal crooks.

Essex Police’s Burnham-based marine unit has launched a new campaign aimed at reducing thefts from boats and increasing awareness of thieves’ activities on land and at sea.

During winter months boats in marinas, on moorings or laid up ashore in boatyards or even in front gardens can be a target for thieves.

The marine unit is now urging all boat owners to join Marine Watch, a neighbourhood watch scheme where clubs and individual boat owners join forces to keep an eye on each other’s craft.

The scheme also involves boats, motors and other parts being logged on a database so that if they are stolen and recovered they can be quickly returned to their owners.
