Mums have been left “flabbergasted” by a council’s request of £213K for a primary school lollipop lady.

Parents of pupils at Tollesbury School agreed to self-fund a lollipop lady after Essex County Council said the traffic volume meant the school did not meet the criteria for one.

But they did not expect the council to demand a one-off payment of £166,840 to cover costs for the next 20 years plus a initial set up fee of £46,842.

The only other option, which they will still struggle to meet, is that of the initial set up fee plus £8,342 per annum to cover running costs.

A county council spokesman said: “We sympathise with parents regarding the costs, although these represent the financial commitment required for this type of activity."
