Dengie residents fear their rural roads now pose a health and safety risk given the surge in heavy vehicles using them.

Nearly 50 people attended a special council meeting to discuss Asheldham and the Dengie road safety and the disruption caused by heavy agricultural vehicles.

Retired David Hall, 60, of Southminster Road, Asheldham, felt that a death on the road was inevitable unless action was taken immediately.

Dengie Roads are a nightmare. Huge lorries belt along to the crop drying plant and once I had my car window smashed by rocks thrown up from one of the tractors and trailers which was speeding on Green Lane.There have been deaths on the Tillingham Road/Dengie straight going into Tillingham and several accidents. Maldon D Council nor the police are interested in the fact that cars speed at 100 mph along this stretch making it very dangerous for anyone trying to exit from homes on this stretch or to walk or cycle on it. I was however stopped by the police and breathalysed on the Burnham Road for going too slowly - I happen to be teetotal and was giving friends a lift home from the para olympics. I hope this campaign is successful!!
