Car thieves are running riot with more than £70,000 of vehicles and their contents stolen in the last fortnight.

The crime blitz has seen four cars, three vans, one pickup truck, one forklift truck and a quad bike all stolen from across the Maldon district in the last 14 days.

Police were unable to attribute the extraordinary rise to anything in particular or comment on whether Christmas nearing could have contributed.

Sgt Martin White, of Maldon police, said: “There doesn’t appear to be any sort of pattern to it.

“There’s no obvious trend either from the type of vehicle, the location, time of day or anything else that we can bunch together.

“You occasionally get increases for no apparent reason and then it goes quiet.

“But if it’s something we are going to get over a prolonged period then we will obviously have a problem.”
