Maldon district: Businesses struggling to fill job vacancies Maldon district: Businesses struggling to fill job vacancies

Unemployment in the district is back on the decline, but employers remain frustrated by the lack of desire shown by many jobseekers.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics indicated the number of people in the Maldon district claiming jobseeker’s allowance fell from 866 in August to 844 in September.

The latest statistics came as a welcome relief after the number rose for the first time in five months in August.

At the end of last week there were 64 jobs within a two-mile radius of Maldon advertised online by Jobcentre Plus, including a post for a taxi driver with Maldon-based Banyards Taxis.

But despite being posted on September 11, manager Colleen Bannister said she had yet to receive any interest in the position.

It is a similar situation in Burnham where Immersive Display Group managing director David Aldridge has been on the look-out for a part-time marketing assistant for months.

I read the job advert in question and it sounds as though the employer is looking for a very specific employee.

perhaps people cant afford to take a part time position as they would then lose benefits designed to keep them afloat.

There are quite a few jobs available but very few of them pay enough to live on. Catch 22.
