Volunteers who give up their time to keep their communities safer will be recognised at a special awards ceremony.

Essex Police and the Essex Police Authority are looking for nominations for the title of Essex neighbourhood watch co-ordinator of the year.

About 8,000 co-ordinators in the county offer support to 40 per cent of households.

Alan Johnson, chair of the Essex County Neighbourhood Watch Association said:

"Neighbourhood Watch provides a great opportunity for people to get involved in their communities, create a strong local spirit and crucially help keep their community safe.”

One co-ordinator from each part of Essex will make up a shortlist before judges pick the overall winner.

To make a nomination, download a form at http://www.essex.police.uk/nhw and complete it and send it by Friday, December 7.
