500 Christian statues to be smashed during new play at Mercury

HUNDREDS of Christian statues are set to be smashed...all in the name of art.

Staff at Colchester’s Mercury Theatre are hard at work handpainting 500 religious icons for a play.

But the statues have a destructive destiny when the Lonesome West reaches a shattering climax.

Set in urban Ireland, the drama is about two argumentative brothers who refuse to get along and one ends up by throwing the figures – including a likeness of the Virgin Mary – to the ground in a furious rage.

Mary Huntingdon, press officer for the Roman Catholic diocese of Brentwood, said she was unsure whether some members of the audience might find the treatment of the figurines offensive. She said: “I suppose the act of smashing them is all part of theatre.

“You can’t really get in the way of a theatre’s role in the community as an entertainer.”

Stage managers Deborah Stubbington and Rebecca Raggett, and artist Rhiannon Howell, have so far finished 250 of the Christian figurines, with 250 still to complete before curtain-up on April 17.

The Lonesome West is one third of the award-winning Leenane trilogy by well-known playwright Martin McDonagh, who won fame for his 2008 film In Bruges.

Critics have described the play as black comedy at its finest, with staged violence a trademark of McDonagh’s work. The audience will be seated on the stage as part of the theatre’s commitment to “creating exciting performance spaces”.

Excellant I am going to make 500 statutes of Mohammed and apply for an arts grant to smash them. Jaywick seems a suitable place for such an expression of theatrical freedom.

Thing is I wonder if I will get away with it or because it isnt a Christian image, will I be arrested for incitement?

I hope everyone realises this is all in the script! As a big fan of Martin McDonagh's work I think everyone should watch the play and make sure they understand the context it occurs in before making any judgements.

It sounds offensive to me. Who do I complain to? Is it religious hatred or racial abuse or something like that? There must be a law against it because we wouldn't get away with it if it concerned Islamic statues, would we?

So let me get this straight:

I conduct a play where the main character is a happy-go-lucky pedophile who actually molests children as part of several scenes. “You can’t really get in the way of a theatre’s role in the community as an entertainer.”

I create excrement on stage and throw it at the unsuspecting audience. “You can’t really get in the way of a theatre’s role in the community as an entertainer.”

I start shouting "F---ing Ki-e! F---ing n---er! F---ing ra--ead! F---ing P--i! “You can’t really get in the way of a theatre’s role in the community as an entertainer.”

Question: Are these people insane?

oneelbk,

What on earth are you talking about?

Please see the comment posted by "Lou" above. "The Lonesome West" is a brilliant play by a brilliant writer. The destruction of the religious statues occurs in the context of a specific story, and is carried out by a character whose motivations and actions are specific to the story being told.

Unfortunately this article makes it appear as though an act of provocative desecration is being carried out in the name of art, and has given rise to ignorant and unhelpful comments such as yours. The examples you cite are nonsensical, provocative and bear no comparison to the situation at hand.

I would urge all those who are offended by the idea of what takes place in this play to find out a little about it - and perhaps even go to see it - it before calling judgement and making silly, illogical and unhelpful statements like the one above.

I find these actions very offensive and hurtful! It is an awful thing to do to the Blessed Mother, who has such love and care for us! How DISRESPECTFUL and NASTY! I don't care WHAT you excuse is or WHAT your "context" is! It is meant to shock and that's all! I am not a fan of sensationalism. You cannot tell me that this was a necessary part of anything! Foolish men!

Can you imagine Abraham on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments, or Moses facing the living God in the burning bush and either of them smashing His image to the ground before His Holy Face? I don't think this would have been a good thing for either one of them, do you? Now consider these words of St. Paul: "It is in God that we live and move and have our being." Actually, the visionaries in Medjugorje say, "We live and move and have our being in the very face of God, all the angels, and all the saints." And I ask you, would you insult the King's Mother or the King's Daughter, in His presence? My bet is that you would NOT! we are accountable at the end of our lives, and sometimes even before we go on to whatever our eternal reward will be. No one is exempt. I would like to use my time on earth to honor the Mother of the Living God, before I fall into His Eternal Hands! She is such a sure help in trouble, as well as at the time of death. When Juan Diego was worried about his uncle's health, Our Lady said to him, "Why are you afraid? Am I not here who am your mother? Do I not hold you in the fold of my mantle?" YES! I WANT TO BE HELD THERE!!! Needless to say, when Juan returned to his uncle, he had been miraculously cured of his deathly illness, and the Blessed Mother had visited him. She has the key to the heart of her Son! I don't know about you, but I don't delude myself about being without sin, and I know I am not perfect, (and trust me, I WORK at it!) and I'm going to need all the help I can get. I am not going to insult the Mother of God, no matter what you do! I will pray for those who insult her! Actually, would you even insult your FRIEND'S MOTHER? And who is your greatest friend, if it isn't the Lord Jesus? Sr. Faustina (now declared a saint, and rightly so!) said once when she was always badly mistreated by someone, "I am so glad that nothing is ever lost." Everything is held in heaven in accountability that only God can judge. One day, Faustina was praying in the chapel and suddenly an angel began singing out Faustina's whole life, and she, so obedient to God's laws, was made glad. That should give a thinking person pause. Can't you just hear the angel singing out about this writer, "He smashed 500 images of the most Holy and Blessed Mother of the Savior and Redeemer of the World!" Nope. not me, Bud! I am NOT going there! I don't want any part of that! Our Lady has been so good to me, I can never repay her enough! When she appears on earth, she comes in a brilliant light, as Revelations describes her,"The woman clothed with the sun and the moon and a crown of twelve stars." That's how she appears in Medjugorje. Visionaries always say she is the most beautiful woman they have ever seen. Think about it. Think twice.

MariaQueen is either taking the Michael out of all of us or she's totally eccentric.
If God does exist then he's to blame for all the deaths in the earthquake in Italy, the torturing of young children by paedophiles, two world wars, starving Africa etc etc.
That's why I prefer think there isn't such a malevolent God. I don't think I'd like this play, but I might go and see it anyway.

Smashing statues are as bad as burning the koran or burning the US flag. It's immoral and just wrong.

MariaQueen, Austin says...
7:53pm Fri 10 Apr 09

So now we're into blaming God for the things we do with our own free will, are we? I think NOT! If we weren't free to choose, there would be no sense in heaven and hell. The Bible says, "The very earth will spew you out for your sins." Perhaps the sin quotient of the world has become so great that the earth is revolting. Did you ever think of that? You should read up on the apparitions taking place in Medjugorje, Yugoslavia. Many of your remarks are answered there, Cliff. Without free will, what would our love of God be worth, anyway? In Medjugorje, Our Lady says that she has come to call mankind back to God for the last time. She asks us to convert, to pray and to fast for the salvation of the world, because it is in great danger right now. THAT I believe! She has given the visionaries 10 secrets about the future of the world, but our prayers and fastings affect them, can ameliorate what will happen, and if enough people respond, can eliminate them altogether. When the visionaries cried out at seeing them, asking why?, Our Lady said, "Look around you. Look at how people are living. God can no longer tolerate that." The problem is not God. The problem is the choices people make. Our lady said that we are to work on converting ourselves, a good enough recommendation, since we can't change anyone else. She has said that "prayer and fasting can stop wars and prevent natural disasters." Sorry if you find my remarks offensive, but now you know how I felt to see such a degradation of Our Lady. I have been a researcher most of my life, and this particular area has been my leisure time research. It's very fascinating, since Our Lady accurately predicted WWII towards the end of WWI. She said, "The war is about to end, but if people do not turn back to God, a worse war will break out...." True enough. People didn't listen then either....

You don't have to believe what is set before you. You can investigate for yourself. Perhaps after that you won't find me "eccentric". I've researched these kinds of things for many years.

MariaQueen, Austin says...
8:09pm Fri 10 Apr 09

Yeah, Feisty, that is precisely what we are being asked to do. :-)) But MORE is asked! We are being asked to pray and fast also for others who do not believe in God, and we are being asked to pray that mankind does not destroy the world....a thing which Our Lady is saying could actually happen if we are not careful. She says that this is "a particular time". Actually, the "infadel" is not Ivan. When asked about Russia and the West, Our Lady replied, "The Russian people will be the ones who will glorify God the most. The West has advanced tehcnology, but they have forgotten God, as though they were their own creators." Ominous sound to that. And now you know what heaven thinks of abortion and cloning and experimenting on human embryos, and you didn't even have to ask!~ Yeah, I'd say it's time to repent.

Boy, what a wonderful rebuttal from Mary Huntingdon.

MariaQueen, Austin says...
6:20am Sat 11 Apr 09

Oh, righto! You guys have a Queen over there. Forgot. You know us uncouth and uncivilized Americans! :-)) I mean to speak of the Queen of Heaven, Mary, the Mother of Our Lord. (No disrespect intended to the Queen of England!) But you know that "work of fiction" you are referring to? It has turned out that the Bible has become the most accurate and reliable guide for archeologists. I mean, that's just one aspect of the Bible actually.

But a lot of people put their faith completely in Scripture, and avoid tradition altogether. We Catholics say yes, well, but who actually wrote the New Testament anyway ifn 'twere not the Apostles, the disciples of Jesus? And of course, all their missionary journies were not in vain, spreading the Good News. They went out and taught according to what they had witnessed and learned. Ergo, they had disciples too, such as Clement of Rome, who is mentioned in the Gospels as being a contemporary of St. Paul, a missionary companion of St. Paul's. Well, we have Clement's writings too. And then there was Ignatius of Antioch, who was taught by St. John (the Apostle), and we have his writings too, etc. And there's Irenaeus of Lyons, and Justin Martyr. Justin Martyr in particular was the one I think who began studying philosophy, but one day, while meditating was approached by a mysterious older man who gave him the "proofs" of the truth he was looking for (the proof of a thing is in prophecy fulfilled, such as the prophecy of Scripture, and I would add as in the prophecy of the Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Fatima and Medjugorje), and those "proofs" were the proofs which came from Christianity. (Thus, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.") Good reading. Justin actually converted Marcus Aurelius through 2 letters of apologetics (Marcus had subscribed to the school of the Stoics, but you probably knew that), even though Marcus had him killed. Sigh...the danged Roman Empire!.... But at Marcus' death, they found he was wearing a small book on a string around his neck which indicated he had secretly accepted the Christian faith. What is fascinating about reading the disciples of the Apostles is their insistence that the story of Jesus Christ was all true. Their sincerity shines through their writings. And who would give up their lives for a "fiction" anyway? Justin, for one, was ...well... martyred. And the disciples of the Apostles were still working miracles, as the Apostles had before them! Very few people are aware of this. I suggest a reading of the Church Fathers before one forms any judgment on the validity of the Gospels.

The amazing thing is that the Catholic church still celebrates the Mass the way it was first celebrated by the Apostles and their disciples. For a "work of fiction" from 2,000 years ago, I think that's a pretty amazing accomplishment of tradition, better than some governments. Something to think about.

I apologize for my rambling commentary. It's a limited space. I could write you several chapters on these things, but have tried to be concise and just refer to crucial points. There are many good books out there for any serious investigation into truth, if that's what one seeks. "Seek and ye shall find", fer sure!

As for "allowing earthquakes", why do men sin against the Commandments of God when they have freedom of will? Life is more integrated than we imagine. If we do not live good lives, and pray to receive God's assistance, how can we expect help from Him? God is merciful, but if we wish to receive that mercy, we must be merciful ourselves. A good father does not spoil the child. I hate seeing earthquakes like anyone else, and do not wish such destruction on anyone. So I pray for the whole world as Our Lady has instructed us to do in Medjugorje. Each of us chooses how we believe and how we act. Often people choose a philosophy or a religion that suits the lifestyle they wish to lead, rather than seeking the truth, finding it, and then living according to the truth. If we just follow our whims, then we risk deluding ourselves.

Cliff, Colchester says...

MariaQueen, Austin says...
5:23pm Sat 11 Apr 09

AH! I knew we would get to the most currently popular "relativism", where "what is true for you is not true for me". That's like saying, "Well, you can believe in gravity if you want to, but I choose to believe in no gravity." Riiiiiight. HOWEVER, YOU WILL STILL BE EARTHBOUND, whether you believe in gravity or not! Same goes for hell. You may not believe in it now, but you will when you get there! One of Mother Angelica's favorite comments. A wise seeker of truth will actually investigate claims rather than nay-saying them off the top of their heads. As I said before, the proof is in the pudding. Our Lady accurately foretold WWII before WWI was ever over. She even intimated the causes of war - turning away from God. Makes sense. The Ten Commandments are God's safety walls, which He built around us. The only thing that can tear them down is sin, or violating those laws, because His laws are the most perfect for peace in the world and with one another. It's common sense. So prophecy fulfilled is the proof of philosophical inquiry, assuming that you even want to know. As for the other recent remarks, may God grant healing and peace of mind and soul to all those who have been wounded by war and hatred, and bring them into fellowship with the rest of humanity. We are all brothers and sisters of the same heavenly Father. God grant you His peace, man!

Boris I think the spirit has left me - I never want to see another Madonna ever, not even one being smashed.
The sad thing is that if they are right I will, indeed, find out when I go to hell or heaven (and as I've never broken a commandment I guess it would be heaven) but if I am right in thinking that there is no life after death, but just death, they'll never know they were wrong and I was right. Shame!
Perhaps we should go and cause mayhem on the website of the Arizona Chronicle.

Have a good time at the play. And trust me, when you do see the Madonna on the other side, you will be enchanted. And if you've never broken a Commandment then please say a little prayer for me and for America.

Arizona? Why in Hades does he think I'm in Arizona? Boy! I really AM lost...uh...not in the Biblical sense...I don't think, anyway....

Oh, and there IS life after death. Our Lady took the visionaries to Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory so that they could witness that these places exist. And now I will exit...where's the exit??? Oh, I WISH you believed in God! My Lord, I think there's No Exit!! Ha,ha. Just a little existential joke...Bye now! You are free of me!

BUT YOU CANNOT SPEAK TRUTH ABOUT "THE HOLOCAUST."

Certainly Jews were among the 55 million who died in World War II, but important claims by Holocaust Fundamentalists are crumbling under deserved examination, even though such examination is—unlike any other historical issue—criminalized in over a dozen "democracies." Have you forgotten that on August 7, 1933 a representative of the World Conference of Jews declared war on Germany and then broadcasted the declaration on WABC radio and published it in the New York Times? For Germany then Jews were a declared internal enemy. See Dr. E. The pose as always sinless perpetual victims is a fraud. There is "cause" and there is "effect." Bad "cause" often begets bad "effect." Have you forgotten the victims of Jewish-led-and-funde

See the videotaped interview of the Auschwitz director admitting that the "gas chamber" was fabricated AFTER the war by the Communists with a wooden door, a "homicidal gas chamber" that has no cyanide residue. The interview was conducted by David Cole, himself a Jew.

The Torah has a long tradition of lying victimhood. For example, note the typically ridiculous self-reports of victimhood in tractate Gittin of the Torah, the 4 billion (yes, billion) Jews killed by the Romans and the 64 million Jewish children skewered and burned in scrolls by the Romans in one city alone .
