COLCHESTER Council is offering grants of £250 to £2,500 to support not-for-profit festivals and events.

The council has set aside £20,000 for its Festival Support Grant Fund, and the application closing date is January 23.

After a successful first round of funding in 2016, the council has reopened the fund to organisers of festivals and events taking place in 2017/18.

The festival could be a self-contained project covering a period of some weeks, or maybe just a one day event.

Applicants must demonstrate how their event delivers impact around the council’s key strategic themes.

This includes objectives around promoting Colchester’s heritage and wide ranging visitor and cultural attractions and developing a strong sense of community.

Councillor Tim Young, portfolio holder for regeneration and culture said: “Last year’s Festival Support Grant Fund proved extremely successful. The funding helped make possible 22 individual festivals and events of all sizes – from right across the borough.

“I am delighted to be able to offer these dedicated organisers the opportunity to apply for this backing once again, which will support exciting activities that residents and visitors alike can enjoy.

“These events are a great way to celebrate the town’s diverse and unique offer. I would encourage anyone working on an event or project to submit an application for this year’s fund.”

Successful events supported by last year’s Festival Support Grant Fund ranged from one day community events like the Big Sunday and the Wivenhoe ArtSeaMusic Festival, to multi day and venue events like the Comedy and Roman River Music Festivals.

Diverse events centred on music, sport, comedy, charity, food, art and street theatre were supported from Tiptree to Wivenhoe and Mersea to Greenstead.

Applications must be submitted by an individual, voluntary or professional organisation or community group from within the Colchester borough only.
