MORE than 3,000 people have applied for the 250 vacancies at Clacton’s new £10million superstore.

The Asda store on Bull Hill Road opens on Monday, October 10.

It will feature a George clothing and home range as well as a café, rotisserie and fish counter.

A self-service petrol station opened early in September.

Dean Bradbrook, general store manager at Asda Clacton, said: “We’ve had a really positive response to the jobs we had on offer at the new store with over 3,000 applications applying for a variety of roles.

“We’ve seen everyone from Spanish X Factor stars to a singing porter throughout the interview process.

“More than 230 locals have now been employed at the store and we can’t wait to have the full team together when we open our doors in October,” he said.

Some 1,500 interviews took place with Asda working with Tendring Council and JobcentrePlus on recruitment which led to an Asda recruitment centre opening in the jobcentre.

Roles included section leaders, checkout and service, home shopping drivers and personal shoppers, bakers and fresh food, security and day and twilight replenishment teams.

A local recruitment strategy was one of the planning conditions imposed by Tendring Council.

Almost all the vacancies have now been filled, with all colleagues now in training at Asda’s stores in Ipswich, Colchester and Harwich.

October’s opening will also see a special display of what might be called Walmart’s woolly wonders.

Tracey Lawrence and three other crafters have knitted a selection of the goods, creating a display which will be on show during its first few weeks.
