A YOUNGSTER has been named Wivenhoe's crabbing champion after a record-busting catch at the town's annual competition.

Jonah Hocker, eight, won the Wivenhoe Crabbing Competition with his crab weighing it an epic 110gs - some 30gs bigger than the run of the mill crustaceans.

The whopper was nicknamed Barnacle Bill and Jonah's mother Charlotte Newell said the youngster was delighted to win his trophy and £25 first prize.

She said: "We think the barnacles it had on it added the extra weight which meant he was able to win.

"He was really pleased with his trophy and spend the £25 on a Lego set - you can get quite good ones for that amount of money."

The annual contest which was run in association with The Wivenhoe Society sees dozens of youngsters go searching for the biggest crabs they can before returning them back to their watery homes.

Proceeds are given to Millfields and Broomgrove Infants and Junior Schools.
