GARDENING duo Dale and Lee Connelly are encouraging youngsters to venture outside this summer.

The Colchester brothers, known as the Skinny Jean Gardeners, will be making an appearance at the Homebase store, in St Andrew's Avenue, as part of its new campaign.

Room to Grow was launched after a Homebase survey revealed screen-time outweighs outdoor activities like gardening in a child’s average week.

It also showed 51 per cent of children will spend most of their summer holiday watching TV and playing computer games.

The Skinny Jean Gardeners will be showing children how to be outside enjoying creative play such as den building, gardening and hunting for bugs.

The pair are regulars at the BBC's Blue Peter garden and ambassadors of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, but also want to motivate a generation of kids to be hands-on in soil.

Join them at Homebase, tomorrow at 11am. Demonstrations will run on until 2pm.
