PERFORMANCE pair Hunt and Darton are back in Colchester next week - and this time they're going local.

In true Hunt and Darton style they are deconstructing the ‘radio show’ in a live hour long performance of their new work in progress, Radio Local, which in their words is a new radio show for locals that is so local you have to be local to hear it.

Jenny Hunt and Holly Darton met while studying at Central Saint Martins in 2003 and have been working together since then.

Using spoken word, movement, sound and installation, their work comes out of a shared interest in what it means to be human, dealing with common problems, embarrassment and behaviour.

“When we first started working together,” Jenny says, “one of our biggest questions was why our audience was over there and we were over here. We began asking ourselves how we could close that gap and we’ve doing it ever since.”

Leaning towards the deadpan and the absurd, they are perhaps most well known for the Hunt and Darton Cafe.

First commissioned by Live Art Collective East for the Cultural Olympiad, the cafe has popped up in Cambridge, the Edinburgh Fringe and last year at the Firstsite Gallery in Colchester, where it was so popular it led to the gallery cafe being permanently located at the front of the building.

Jenny adds: "This show is so new we haven’t even made it yet.

"We will be asking the audience to build it with us from creating jingles, phone-ins, features and taking on the responsibility of what discs should be spun.

"This show celebrates everything local. We love the local chippy that asks how your week’s been, people taking pride in where they live, and doing things for the community."
