A 91-YEAR-OLD book fan is sharing his love for the written word by inspiring tiny readers of the future.

Peter Cave, from Chelmsford, began volunteering at Chelmsford Library earlier this year and now spends Thursday afternoons taking the Baby and Toddler Rhymetime sessions with a group of youngsters and their families.

Mr Cave said: “The most enjoyable part of the role is having the little toddlers around me.

“We haveahalf-an-hour session every week in which we sing songs and act songs and the lady with whom I work reads them a story and I read them a simple story.

“I enjoy it very much.

“I have done a fair amount of work recording children’s stories in the past and it is something I do find enjoyable.”

He is keen for others to get involved with the library and said: “I really enjoy it, and if others are interested, then they should come along and see what is involved.”

Despite turning 91 two weeks ago, Mr Cave is determined to keep his volunteering up for as long as possible and has been praised by councillors for his dedication to the youngsters.

Councillor Roger Hirst, Essex County Council cabinet member responsible for customer services, libraries, planning and the environment, said: “Peter is an outstanding example of the volunteers who help deliver quality services in the libraries.

“He clearly enjoys his involvement with his group.”

Anyone interested in volunteering, should ask at their local library, or email libraries.
