CHELMSFORD Council’s recycling and waste depot opened its doors, providing a rare opportunity for residents to see how the recycling process works.

A total of 360 members of the public visited Freighter House, where they were able to sit in different collection vehicles and speak to staff.

In 2014, the staff at Freighter House collected more than 32,000 tonnes of material for recycling, including 4,300 tonnes of recycled paper, 3,700 tonnes of food waste and 17,000 tonnes of garden waste. About 43,000 tonnes of waste couldn’t be recycled.

The council’s recycling and waste operations manager, Peter Masson, said: “Well done to all our residents who contributed towards recycling more than 32,000 tonnes of material last year – this is excellent!

“However, with landfill space rapidly depleting and the financial and environmental costs of burying waste rising each year, we all need to recycle even more for a sustainable future.”
