Essex County Council has received a prestigious award for its support for defence personnel.

The council was awarded a Silver Award in the new Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

Councillor Norman Hume, chairman of Essex County Council, received the honour at a special ceremony at Wivenhoe House, near Colchester, from Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant for Essex last Thursday.

Councillor Hume said: “I am very proud to receive this award on behalf of Essex County Council.

"We always strive to support all our employees and have a policy of mobile and flexible working to help everyone balance their work and personal commitments.

“So I am delighted our efforts, particularly those which support defence personnel, are helping to make a difference.”

The scheme, launched recently by Prime Minister David Cameron, is being implemented by Supporting Britain's Reservists and Employers (SaBRE).

It is part of the Government’s commitment to recognise and reward employers who support defence personnel, including reservists, veterans, the wounded, injured or sick, families and cadets.

Kristina Carrington, Regional SaBRE campaign director, said “It is very important that we are able to recognise the continued support and commitment Essex County Council gives to their reservist employees.

"From support for training courses through to mobilisation, Essex County Council’s commitment to defence has been unwavering and they are very worthy Silver Award Winners”.
