TEENAGE killer Edward Redman has launched an appeal against his conviction and sentence for stabbing student Jay Whiston to death.

Redman, 18, of Weyland Drive, Stanway, was jailed for at least 17 years on May 1 after a jury unanimously found him guilty of murder.

Redman, who did not give evidence during the 12-week hearing, has launched an appeal claiming he did not get a fair trial.

The Court of Appeal confirmed an appeal had been lodged, but it is still at the stage where a single judge is considering if there are sufficiently strong grounds for Redman to appeal.

If he decides there are, three judges will hear the appeal.
