An alarmingly high number of cats have gone missing across the Dengie, sparking fears a cat-snatcher may be on the loose.

Concerned residents have been posting about their missing cats on Facebook, with some suggesting it might be more than just a coincidence.

Over one weekend four cats went missing in the Dengie area.

Glyness Rowell, of Southminster, said: “‎Four cats went missing this weekend it sounds awfully weird don’t you think?”

Nikki Poyntz, 42, of Hall Road, Asheldham, has been missing her ginger and white domestic cat, Henry, for three weeks.

The Dengie covers 18 villages.

Is 4 missing cats really the work of a cat snatcher over 18 villages - I dont think so.

As heartbreaking as it must be for the owners concerned - there is no cat snatcher on the loose in the dengie.

Cats wander off all the time some turn up years later in different parts of the country.

Cats get run over and their carcasses removed by wild animals, the council etc etc.

Hope the cats come home soon, but its amazing how some people jump on the bandwagon - even those that dont own cats.

I've had cats go missing this time of year, and heartbreaking though it is, you never OWN a cat. It owns you. It is a worrying suggestion that cats are being taken. Considering the credit pinch and and the cost of food, I wouldn't be surprised if some end up on a dinner table. My current cats are kept indoors as we are in a flat, so I don't have the concern right now.

The likely perpetrator is 3-4 feet long with ginger hair and a big bushy tail.
