A Maldon septuagenarian is in the running to be crowned one of the UK’s unsung swimming stars at a national awards ceremony.
Tony Shrimpton, 77, of Beeleigh Road, has been shortlisted in the Senior Swimmer of The Year category at the 2012 Kellogg’s ASA Swimtastic Awards on October 20.
The former Maldon mayor will swim with Paralympics’ double gold medalist Ellie Simmonds before the ceremony at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.
The Maldon district and town councillor said he was thrilled with the news he was shortlisted.
He said: “That’s fantastic, I feel very flattered that people think I am good enough to be nominated.”
