Burnham could be served by a new dial-and-ride bus service as soon as November.

Residents have long criticised the lack of public transport available and further concerns were expressed at a meeting of the Dengie Bus Users’ Group in the town in July.

But after pressing ahead with plans to register the Burnham extension of its Dengie DaRT 5 as a commercial service, Maldon-based Arrow Taxis is optimistic it can be up and running as soon as approval is received and a 60 day notice period is served.

The new route would provide a service from upper Althorne to Ostend, Creeksea and Burnham, but would not cover routes already served by Stephensons or First.

Cheaper than a taxi, but slightly more expensive than a conventional bus, it would also allow Burnham residents to travel to places such as Maldon’s St Peter's Hospital and Broomfield Hospital, in Chelmsford, via a link with the DaRT 99.
