Maldon District Council has become the first local authority in Essex to sign up to a campaign devised to promote the need for affordable housing in rural areas.

The average house price in the district is already ten times the average regional income.

With almost seven out of ten Maldon residents living in rural places, the council is concerned a lack of affordable housing could put traditional village life at risk.

By joining 49 local authorities across the country in signing up to the National Housing Federation’s Save our Villages campaign, Maldon District Council aims to rejuvenate flagging rural communities.
