Maldon District Council has paid thanks to residents who responded to consultation over its future development plans.

The preferred options consultation for the council's Local Development Plan, which will set out how the district should be developed between 2014 and 2029, concluded at the end of August.

The council has thanked the 950 people who responded, as well as the estimated 1,400 who attended various consulation events at schools, shops, village halls, libraries and other locations.

Its planning policy team is currently reviewing the responses received, ahead of making any necessary amendments.

Penny Channer, chairman of the council’s planning and licensing committee, said: “The infrastructure projects that will be required to support any proposed future development in the district will be a vital consideration in relation to the progression of the plan.

"Officers are continuing to work closely with key partners and infrastructure providers to ensure that these important issues are an integral part of the Local Development Plan process."

Further public consultation will be carried out prior to final submission to the Secretary of State for independent examination.

In these days of David Cameron's 'Big Society' it's great to hear the public being thanked for their effort or input, just a shame Maldon District Council haven't always reacted positively to public input.
The Council should be grateful for free public input. As advice sought by the Council through Consultants doesn't normally come free or cheap, and in some instances has been shown to be a waste of public money.
If only MDC had paid heed to public opinion over the universally popular Marine Lake, which they closed, despite the overwhelming public input to keep it. Also wasting money defending their criminal neglect of infrastructure, leading to the resulting death in the Lake.
Rather than maintain the Marine Lake, MDC spend vast sums removing infrastructure and creating an Ornamental lake.
On top of the Lake debacle, MDC then borrowed money from a bank, to build the 'public' pool beside the Promenade, which they promptly handed over to a 'for profit' private company to run. The pool complex has had to undergo more than one major repair in it's relatively short existence (in relation to the Marine Lake), which surely highlights that consultancy fees paid for advice on it's construction, were either worthless or MDC ignored advice, either way, once more the public bears the cost.
Could the relatively small number that responded to the LDP, reflect the feeling that the Council will do what they want, regardless of public opinion or input.
Sadly, based on previous form, I find myself wondering if local Council Tax payers will be paying any of the costs, resulting from the death at the Blackwater Leisure Centre.

I'm unaware of the Council's future plans or proposals for the Promenade. But if there are plans to develop there, it will be interesting to see if, Leisure Connections Ltd and Harpers Fitness PLC, or any of the other 47 subsidiaries of the parent company, Danoptra Ltd, would be involved with Maldon District Council. As this group of companies do appear to cover a lot of the leisure sector.
