Hundreds of people turned up at Maldon’s top tourist attraction last Friday to join in with the world’s biggest coffee morning.

Promenade Park, off Park Drive, is visited by 500,000 people every year and played host to one of more than 2,000 coffee mornings across Essex as part of one of Macmillan’s biggest annual fundraisers.

In 2011, 51,000 people signed up to coffee morning, raising a record £10 million.

The coffee morning at Promenade Park lasted from 11 til 2:30pm, with five tables full of donated cakes and biscuits.

Roy Read, of Maldon District Council ’s Promenade Park team, said: “It went very well, the weather was lovely and it was a beautiful setting for a coffee morning. It was really nice and relaxed.

“Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves.

“We had to pack up earlier than expected because we ran out of cakes, which is brilliant.”

Mr Read estimates they raised £100 more than last year’s total of £700.
