The district’s largest secondary school is celebrating record-breaking results, despite the furore surrounding lower than expected English grades across the country.

Maldon’s Plume School upped its A* to C pass rate, including English and maths, from 54 per cent last year to 58 per cent this time around.

A record 79 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C grades, excluding the core subjects, up from 75 per cent.

Headteacher David Stephenson, who has vowed to make the appropriate representations and appeals to ensure his students were not disadvantaged, said: “We are delighted with these record breaking results and they continue the very positive trend of sustained improvement over several years.

“They reflect the huge amount of work by our students and mean the great majority can progress to further study at our very successful Plume Sixth Form College."
