Burnham: Youngsters receive certificates for averting shop blaze Burnham: Youngsters receive certificates for averting shop blaze

Two youngsters who averted a major blaze in Burnham have been given certificates from the Essex fire department as a thank you for their quick thinking.

Oliver Vallance, nine, of Lilian Road, and Finley Smyth, ten, of the town’s Albert Road, spotted a shop on fire as they were walking to Riverside Park and immediately dialled 999.

St Mary’s Primary School pupil Oliver said he instantly knew what to do and was not nervous at all.

He said: “I was worried that the houses would catch fire with people inside.

“We both knew to call the fire brigade.

“It was only nerve-wracking when the firemen were asking us questions.

“We didn’t expect to see a fire at all, it made me feel quite scared.”
