Colchester-based soldiers called up at the last minute to provide security at the Olympics will be sleeping in an old tobacco warehouse.

Troops from 3 Battalion the Parachute Regiment and 7 Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery were told to cancel any planned holidays to work at the London 2012 venues last week.

It came after security company G4S, which was providing secuirty for the sites, admitted it did not have enough staff to fulfil its contract.

Defence secretary Philip Hammond yesterday said the majority of the 3,500 military personnel called up will be staying at Grage I listed Tobacco Dock in Wapping.

Troops are expected to start their work at the Olympics this week.
