Wickham Bishops: Garden opera coming to village tomorrow
4:30pm Friday 13th July 2012 in News
A popular garden opera event promises to enthral its audience in the open air.
Opera in the Orchard grew out of a dream of Robbie Bishop of Wickham Bishops, to share the beauty of his home with others, together with his love of opera as experienced during his working life in Rome.
Here, he saw opera enjoyed by a wide cross section of the community.
What was also very obvious was that opera was definitely enjoyed by the whole family of several generations.
With this in mind, he set up Opera in the Orchard in 2001, at the age of 80 years, to provide opera to the rural communities surrounding Maldon and Witham.
Mr Bishop’s aim was not only to provide opera, but to ensure that the opera was performed by artists with professional experience, who would act, sing and entertain, to demonstrate just how enjoyable opera can be.
Over a glass or two of wine in the company of friends, the dream became real.
This year’s Opera in the Orchard will feature La Traviata and will take place from 5pm tomorrow, with the gates opening from 2pm.
Visitors are invited to bring create their own picnics from food stalls selling local produce.
There will also be a barbecue, ice cream, cup cake stall as well as a licensed beer tent selling Farmers Ales from Maldon.
For those who would like to stay over, camping is available at £10 per pitch per night.
Tickets cost £40 per person and there is free entry for children up to the age of 18.
For more information, call Ann Bishop on 01621 894112.
Opera in the Orchard will take place at Bouncers, Wickham Hall Lane, Wickham Bishops and for satnav users the postcode is CM8 3JJ For further details, visit operaintheorchard.co.uk
