A 21-year-old pie maker from Goldhanger has struck gold in a national pie competion.
Peter Lawrence, from Rockleys Farm on Church Road, began making pies two years ago after graduating from Colchester Catering College.
He entered a 35 portion chicken and tarrogan pie, with an 12 inch diameter and traditional turkey decoration, to the competition at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
To his surprise, Mr Lawrence won a gold award for his pie, beating more seasoned competitors from across the UK.
He said: “I was so surprised. This is the first year I have entered so I was doing it for the experience rather than expecting to win anything.
