A shopkeeper has collected customers’ spare change in a bottle for 13 years, amassing over £8000.

Syd Williams, from Main Road, St Lawrence, has raised £8011.17 of customers’ change at The Dairy Store to put towards building a new village hall in Jubilee Field.

Building work on the hall began on Monday after more than a decade of fundraising efforts.

Mr Williams said: “I started the collection bottle in 1999 because I was new to the area and I heard people were trying to raise money for a new village hall so I thought I’d get involved.

“I never thought it would get this far.”
