Purleigh: Caroline steps in to run village PO Purleigh: Caroline steps in to run village PO

A village post office has been spared closure after a woman who first worked in the shop as a teenager in the 1970s took the reigns.

Penny Barber, who had run the village shop and post office in The Glebe, Purleigh for eight and a half years, announced her intention to retire in January.

It was feared the village might have to face up to life without the service unless a long-term successor could be found.

But the 61-year-old was finally able to retire on June 6 - three months after she had originally planned to - safe in the knowledge that the post office was in the capable hands of Caroline Wade.
